Mug #1

Planning: After working on my bust for a couple of weeks I got a little frustrated and decided that I wanted to take a break and work on something I can use once completed. I started working on a basic mug for about a week.

Process: This mug was super simple for me to make. On a Monday in class, I made a slab on the slab roller to prepare for Tuesdays class. On Tuesday I came to class and the slab was a bit dried and not as even as I wanted it so I remade the slab. After remaking the slab I rolled it and sized it around a pool noodle from outside. After rolling the slab around the noodle, I made a base from left over parts of the slab and slipped and scored this to the wrapped slab. After this I made the slab as even as possible and then added the handle. I made the handle out of the remaining parts of the slab and slipped and scored this on to finish the mug. The handle did droop a little bit, so I had to leave it to dry in the position I wanted.

Midnight's Mug/Cup
Planning: Planning/Inspiration for this mug came from the one I made prior to this. While making my first basic mug, I decided I wanted to make another one with a theme.
Process: With this mug I decided instead of making the whole thing by creating a slab I wanted to try and make a pinch pot cup. I started with a ball of 612 clay and shaped it to be the base of a cup. I made the base as smooth and even as possible and then started in the handle. I made a small coil and then shaped the handle by tapping it onto a board to try and get it a bit more flat. After making the shape of the handle I slipped and scored the handle onto the cup. This handle stayed upright a lot more then the last. Finally, I did roll out a slab to cut out the stars for on the side. I got a cutter from the box in the back of the classroom to cut out stars and then slipped and scored each star onto the cup. I then glazed each star Banana Yellow and the rest of the cup XXXX purple.
Glazes: Banana Yellow, Lilac Purple

Clay type: 612

Evermore Mug

Planning: After making my midnight's mug, I decided I wanted to make another mug that was Taylor Swift inspired. I looked through the album covers and decided I wanted to try and recreate the Evermore album cover.
Process: I began this mug by making another slab. I knew I didn't have a lot of time for this project because it is so close to break, so I decided to make it with a slab because it is the fastest method for me. I made this mug by wrapping it around to the desired shape and size. I decided to try and make the braid in her hair the handle. I did this by cutting small strips and braiding it slowly to try and keep it from cracking. I used a paint brush to try and keep it as wet as possible. After attaching the handle by slipping and scoring I set the mug to dry with the handle in the shape I wanted. After letting it dry, I cut out small square slabs as evenly shaped as possible and then slipped and scored each tile on. After this is made sure each piece was connected as well as possible. This piece is now being fired.
Glazes: Has not been glazed yet

Master Artwork: Sunflowers in a Windstorm

Planning: After getting the assignment to recreate a painting in a museum, I immediately began looking for paintings of sunflowers to recreate. My grandmas favorite flowers were sunflowers, so I wanted to make a piece that would remind me of her. This is why I decided to chose Sunflowers in a Windstorm.

Process: I began making my piece by making a circular base for th
e middle of the flower. I cut out a base and then individually cut out petals for the flowers. I was going to make a big and small flower that I could use for a key holder or ring holder. I slipped and scored each individual petal onto the flower and then placed both on a bowl. I wrapped each bowl in a bag so the flowers would not stick. I let them dry until the petals would not fall to give them the effect of being in a windstorm. After letting them dry a little, I smoothed out the edges as best as I could and then set them to be put in the kiln. Unfortunately the next day when we came back, both flowers had completely broken. After completely drying all of the petals began snapping off until there was none left.
